The Bakamitai deepfake memes have gotten so big that even Japan has noticed now. I still don’t get why they’re so popular, but a lot of the people who’ve seen the memes seem to end up on this site reading my translation of the lyrics, so can’t complain I guess lol …

Not much going on last month, really. It was Sega’s 60th anniversary, but with Tokyo still affected by coronavirus restrictions and Sega staff still working from home, the celebrations were somewhat muted.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of doing this before … there’s a lot of stuff that I read, or see on Twitter, or wherever, that I don’t post about because fully translating would take a lot of time, or it’s not big enough news to warrant a post to itself, or whatever. So in future, I’m going to save up all that small stuff and put it in a post like this. Hopefully I’ll manage to keep it fairly regular, though of course sometimes there just isn’t much going on so it might not always be monthly! 

Since this is the first one, it will be a biggish post. They’ll probably be smaller in future! Oh yeah, and just to be clear, it’s only going to be Japanese news, since I don’t keep up with what’s happening in the west, and there are plenty of other sources for that anyway.

Here’s the second part of the video series discussing Ryu ga Gotoku 7. We’re joined this time by the game’s director Horii Ryosuke, and I apologise in advance for the large amount of things I couldn’t decipher. Horii speaks fast, and I think also my vocabulary’s lacking, since it was mostly the discussion of the character jobs I had trouble with. Anyway, I did my best, and it’s better than nothing, I hope!

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio released this video last week. It’s the first part of what I assume will be a three-part series (since the next part is teased as the “middle part”) aimed at addressing all the things people keep grumbling about and questioning in regard to Ryu ga Gotoku 7. As I’ve said before, my listening skills aren’t fantastic, but I’ve done my best to translate as much of the discussion as I can. 

Ryu ga Gotoku Online: rejected characters popularity poll

As part of the celebration of the game’s one-year anniversary, RyuOn has launched a new popularity poll, this time featuring characters rejected during development. I remember Yokoyama talking about how they had a hard time designing new characters for the game in one of the early interviews they did about RyuOn, so it’s fun to see some actual examples.

Today’s (September 14) Ryu ga Gotoku 7 panel at Tokyo Game Show focused on the story, and they showed a few clips from the opening part of the game. I’ve translated them, included some of the developers’ comments (what I could understand!), and also filled in some background based on things that are the same in Ryu ga Gotoku Online.
