JudgeEyes

Updated September 20, October 10, October 25, November 15, with new cast information.

I’ve translated the story and cast information from the official site. It looks like localisation is totally on top of this one, since they’ve subbed the trailer already and announced the western release (though with no date yet). So it doesn’t look like I’m going to need to do much for it. But of course, I want to know what it’s all about!

This is still a bit rough, but I don’t have time to do any more right now, so I might come back and tidy it up later. I’ll put up the bits of gameplay info later, or tomorrow. Oh, and since the official site has the cast names in English, with the names in English order (surname last), I’ve stuck with that in the translation this time.

Sega Games announced the PS4 game Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon on September 10. This game’s protagonist is played by the performer and actor Takuya Kimura. He plays the protagonist who, after being thrust down to the depths of despair, rises again: Takayuki Yagami.

Takaya Kimura x Ryu ga Gotoku Studio x legal suspense action

Actor and performer Takaya Kimura and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio’s Toshihiro Nagoshi combined in a powerful tag team, to create an original legal suspense action work.

Takayuki Yagami – played by Takuya Kimura. Protagonist: former lawyer now detective.

Quote: I’ll get to the bottom of every case. … That should be my right!

Early in Yagami’s former career as a lawyer, he defended a client arrested for a murder charge. In the trial, where no-one doubted the defendant’s guilt, Yagami amazingly won a not guilty verdict. However, when Yagami learned the defendant committed a second murder, he lost the will to continue as a lawyer. He opened a business as a small-time private investigator. His experience as a lawyer, plus the fighting skills he honed in Kamurocho, mean he’ll accept any request, earning him the nickname “Jack of all trades” [literally, “the anything shop”], and as such he is relied on by many Kamurocho residents. Yagami himself grew up in Kamurocho, so he has an attachment to the people, and kindly took on their requests. But one day, because he was asked to gather evidence regarding a bizarre murder incident that occurred in Kamurocho, he found himself caught in that incident’s whirlpool.

STORY

The “darkness” in people’s hearts, shut off from all “light”, Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon. A man imprisoned by his past, having overcome suffering and setbacks, a divine revelation, a whisper of the Shinigami.

Takayuki Yagami’s parents were both killed when he was 15. His father, who was a lawyer, took charge of a murder trial and won a not guilty verdict, but because of the violence of the victim’s family, his father, who was responsible for the defence, and his mother both lost their lives.

Since then, Yagami, left without a single relative, got through his hopeless despairing youth in Kamurocho, thanks to the support of various sympathetic people, and decided to become a lawyer like his father.

And then Yagami ended up being in charge of the defence in a certain murder incident. Like his father before him, believing in the innocence of the defendant, Shinpei Okubo, he succeeded in winning a not guilty verdict.

With Japanese criminal trials resulting in a guilty verdict 99.9% of the time, such a decision could be called a miracle, and Yagami became famous overnight.

However …

Immediately after Shinpei Okubo was found not guilty and released, his lover was murdered. She was stabbed more than ten times, and the apartment they lived in was set on fire.

Seeing the cruel crime of this man who had just been released, society’s assessment of Yagami was completely reversed.

“The cheating lawyer who unleashed a murdering demon on the world.”

Shinpei Okubo was sentenced to death, and Yagami, who till then had been the performer of a miracle, lost everything he had built up. Even his confidence as a lawyer …

Three years later …

Yagami, taking off his lawyer badge, became a private detective. Confused and violent. Kamurocho, the town of drifters, many of whom carry wounds from their past. Yagami, back in his second hometown, managed to scrape a living there.

However, there was an outbreak of serial murders in Kamurocho. While murders are not rare in this town, all the victims had had their eyeballs cut out, and the bizarreness of these murders put people in shock.

Yagami, being a former lawyer, at the request of a law firm, and simply for the reward, becomes connected to these serial murders. Expecting to uncover the truth, he had no idea it would change his own destiny.

Mitsuru Kuroiwa – played by Shosuke Tanihara

Quote: Three years ago, a murderer was found not guilty because of your defence, and an innocent woman was burned to death. Who will be his next victim? Think about that … “Yagami-sensei.”

Kamuro Police Criminal Investigations Department Detective. He’s usually the lead investigator, so he can boast of a high arrest rate in Kamurocho crimes. He has both brains and brawn, an elite detective with a bright future. He can’t stand Yagami.

Kyohei Hamura – played by Pierre Taki

Quote: That time you got the “not guilty” verdict was dazzling. So maybe you let a murderer go. Right? Tell the truth.

The “number 2” – wakagashira – of the Matsugane Gumi, a third rank Tojo Kai gang whose stronghold is Kamurocho. He’s an egocentric strategist who excels at taking other people down. He became involved with Yagami during the serial murders incident.

Masamichi Shintani – played by Takuya Kirimoto

Quote: Hey, it’s not just about winning. As your senior, I … hey, are you listening?

Genda Law Office lawyer. He fiercely defends his status as Yagami’s senior. While he brings out his strength when facing opponents weaker than himself, against strong opponents he adopts a servile attitude.

Saori Shirosaki – played by Yuko Kaida

Quote: The client is Shinpei Okubo . It seems he’s been arrested for murder.

Genda Law Office lawyer. Quick-witted and fast-talking, with an extremely cool and businesslike attitude. She’s calm and works at her own pace. If she has something to say, she’ll say it straight.

Masahiro Kaito – played by Shinshu Fuji

Quote: Right, let’s go, Ta-bou. Don’t fuck this up!

He’s a detective in the Yagami Detective Agency, but he’s older than Yagami. A former member of the Tojo Kai gang Matsugane Gumi. He has a big voice, and an arrogant attitude, but he’s not malicious, just blunt. He and Yagami have been friends since they were young, and he affectionately calls him Ta-bou. Naturally, following his expulsion, he keeps his lingering affection for Matsugane Gumi mostly hidden.

Mitsugu Matsugane – played by Tomomichi Nishimura

Quote: Oh, long time no see, Ta-bou. Thought I was never going to get to see you again.

The patriarch of the Tojo Kai third rank gang, Matsugane Gumi. A usually good-natured old man who always has a smile and a kind word for Yagami. When Yagami decided to become a lawyer, he supported him, and looked after him like a son. As a yakuza boss, he can be too kind, and lately he’s been unable to control the rise of his wakagashira Hamura,  so now he’s all but retired.

Toru Higashi – played by Yoshihisa Kawahara

Quote: I’ve got a “mean look”? … Duh, of course I have. I’m a fucking yakuza!

Member of Matsugane Gumi. In the past, he admired Kaito’s courage, and worshipped him as his aniki. However, after Kaito was expelled from the gang a year ago, thanks to Hamura’s patronage he’s risen in prominence within the gang.

Quote: I hate it when people burden me with expectations. So always coming second basically suits me fine …

A newly-hired lawyer at Genda Law Office. On his second attempt, he passed the bar exam in the top rank. Whatever he’s doing, he puts his full effort into it, and will flawlessly complete it, but he has no ambition and is likely to run away from responsibilities, a classic herbivorous young man. He also secretly has feelings for his fellow lawyer Saori.

Mafuyu Fujii – played by Risa Shimizu

Quote: I can’t help it, I’m a prosecutor. It’s my job to be suspicious of people.

A female prosecutor at the Tokyo District Office. A well-brought up young lady with a strong sense of justice, she passed the bar exam after a decent amount of effort. She was a childhood friend of Saori from Genda Law Office, and they met again when they attended law school at the same time. Because of her looks, everyone treats her like a lady, but really she wants to be recognised for her abilities.

Kunihiko Morita – played by Junpei Morita

Quote: I see. So the criminal is someone else? Are you able to explain that to us here?

Tokyo District chief public prosecutor. Because of his sincere personality, he is Mafuyu’s hero. He rarely lets his subordinates see him smile, he chooses his words carefully, and many are intimidated by his logical arguments. However, outside of work, his mature attitude means he can sometimes give a genuine smile.

Keigo Izumida – played by Tsuguo Mogami

Quote: So you’re a private detective now, eh. A lawyer who once achieved a not guilty verdict … such a waste.

Tokyo District public prosecutor. Proud, and full of self-confidence, he tends to look down on criminals. As an excellent prosecutor he can handle more cases at the same time than anyone else, but he was shamed by Yagami in that case three years ago. He ended up being laughed at by everyone around him, so he now harbours a deep resentment towards Yagami.
